Ponniyin Selvan - The Set is a historical fiction written in Tamil by a noted writer R. Krishnamurthy or Kalki. The story revolves around King Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty which ruled the southern state during the 10th and 11th century. The title of the novel literally means "The son of Ponni". The novel Ponniyin Selvan - The Set is a five volume novel which was written in a time span of three years and six months. King Rajaraja Chola I, a successor of the Chola Dynasty, was also known as Arulmozhi Varman. He was given the name Ponniyin Selvan. The novel tries to focus on the King's relation with his family, especially his sister whom he loved to the extent that he named his daughter after his sister. The story depicts the travel narration of the travelogue of Vandiyathevan, a young and charming man who visited the Chola Land to deliver a message by Aditya Karikalan, the crowned prince of that time to the King and Princess. The story is weaved around the travel experiences of Vandiyathevan and Prince Arulmozhi Varman's travel to Sri Lanka. The story proceeds with the efforts of Arulmozhi Varman's sister to bring him back to the land to restore peace and harmony. Some of the major characters of the novel are Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan, Arulmozhi Varman, Kundavai, Nandhini, Poonkuzhali, and Azhwarkadiyan Nambi.
