The British newspaper 'Punch' is said to have coined the term 'cartoon' which we use today to give a caricature or satirical meaning. When the Parliament Buildings burned down in 1843, at the time of its reconstruction, the British government called for sketches and murals of the interior and models or cartoons from painters.
Many artists composed the painting mocking the government spending money on such luxury while the people were starving in poverty. They were exhibited under the heading 'Cartoon'.
