Once upon a time in Ceylon there was a warrior called Kandi. A Tamil Liberation Movement sentenced him to death. On a later occasion, the movement also waived the death penalty. I don't know anything more about the history of Kandy Veeran. But such an incident is very rare in the history of our struggle.
Cases of recovery of people caught in the hands of movements are rare. This is a particularly rare case where the death penalty was later commuted. Ever since I heard about Kandi Veeran I have been wondering how this could have happened. I was very interested in writing the story of Kandi Veeran.
But I cannot imagine how this could have happened. Recently I read a short story by Leo Tolstoy. Akur Anantacharyar has translated the story into Tamil with a long title, 'Who can tie up an elephant and feed it'? The story takes place in Europe in 1897. But it suddenly occurred to me that the story of Kandi Veeran in Ceylon in 1984 could have been similar to that story.
Tell me how else the Kandi hero could have escaped death! So you must allow me to take the story of the author Tolstoy and insert into it the story of the Kandi hero.
