Various species of indigenous freshwater fishes, collected from wild habitats in Sri Lanka, are exported as ornamental fishes to about 50 different countries of the world, this posing a serious conservation issue. The present work is an empirical attempt to analyse and evaluate the export trade of freshwater fish in Sri Lanka, with a specific focus on endemic species. Different aspects and dimensions of the subject, as analysed in the study are: status of freshwater fish fauna in Sri Lanka and their conservation; species subjected to export trade and their trade quantities; costs and benefits from export of endemic freshwater fish; and legal, policy and institutional issues related to fish export. It is observed that among the various species exported, a vast majority is of indigenous species including about a score of those which are endemic and collected from wild habitats, and thus the export trade is highly unsustainable. The study ends with a set of suggestions on policy, legislative and institutional interventions for sustainability of fish export trade in Sri Lanka. The book is meticulously produced and contains a large number of spectacular colour photographs of various fish species, their habitats and distribution maps.
