  • Although this book was developed for students taking the First Certificate Exam, it can be used by all students, whether entered for the FCE or not (and this is stated in the note to the teacher at the beginning of the book). This proposal looks at how the book can be marketed in a non-FCE country like Korea. Since the book was published, the CUP sales team in Korea has generally been getting good feedback on 'Cambridge Grammar for First Certificate', and believe that this book could do well in Korea. However their biggest stumbling block is the fact that not many Koreans have ever heard of the "First Certificate," and therefore do not know what the book is actually for. Most of the feedback that they've been receiving indicates that the book is seen more as a grammar prep book for English tests in general. The sales team believes that the book would sell if it was marketed as such a product. Already this title has caught the attention of the local ELT distributor - which has approached CUP about marketing it in Korea - because it has certain features that make it an attractive product in the Korean market. (a) It is a new product. Korean teachers and students are always drawn to new products. Especially a new Cambridge product that is well-developed. (b) It has clear grammar explanations, plenty of practice, and an excellent "context listening" section. Products with an excellent audio component or a strong 'listening' section are always highly-rated in Korea because this is one of the two weakest areas for most students. (c) Grammar itself is a universal area of study for all students of English - whether or not they have signed up for the FCE. Feedback from our ELT distributor in Korea has been positive. They are confident that the books will be well-received in the market. As a sign of their interest in the product, the distributor is proposing to purchase 10,000 copies of this book (in one non-returnable, bulk order) if a 'version' of the book could be created for Korea alone. In the Korean 'version', the book title and the two Introduction pages will be presented in Korean (instead of English). So the front and back covers of the book, as well as pages (vii) and (viii) will be in Korean -- while all other content/pages in the book will remain unchanged in English. Having the book title and the Introduction pages in Korean will enable the reference to the FCE to be omitted and replaced with an appropriate equivalent in Korean. Translation work, Korean typesetting, proofreading and production work would be managed by the editorial office in Singapore -- which is experienced with work of this nature, having handled the same type of work for the Korea version of the CALD User's Guide, jacket and slipcase in 2003. The Korean sales team and the ELT distributor will be consulted and their feedback will be sought at each stage of the process to ensure that the product is developed according to the market's needs.
