A society woman decides to 'educate' a man and is met with impropriety a small group of European settlers find themselves socially compromised by each other's infidelity and a 'second-rate woman' proves herself worthy in the eyes of the women of Shimla. These stories chronicle the lives of the British people who settled in the hills of India at the turn of the twentieth century and the ways in which they adapted to the demands of Empire.
